CONSULTING
Science-based targets
Connect science-based targets to your business.
Support baseline preparation, target-boundary assessment and science-based target documentation. Applicable requirements depend on current SBTi rules.
Prepare the evidence
Review company classification, emission boundaries and existing inventories to identify target-setting needs.
Develop the submission
Discuss coverage, reduction direction and documentation under the applicable pathway. A proposed target is not a validated target.
Support implementation
Connect targets to reduction work and progress tracking. Validation is decided independently by SBTi.
Move from ambition to preparation
Science-based target work supports businesses responding to customers or translating a climate commitment into a reduction direction. Carbonstop can assist with baseline records, pathway discussions, target materials and implementation planning. Preparation should check the current company classification, sector requirements and applicable version rather than copying fixed parameters from an earlier project. Consultancy and the validation decision made by SBTi Services are separate stages, and the company should identify its current status clearly.
Check whether the baseline supports target work
Review the organizational boundary, Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 records, including periods, methods and completeness. An existing inventory may still need additional evidence for target preparation. Influential categories, estimates and boundary differences deserve attention. A preparation register can assign the missing records to finance, purchasing and factory teams. The design basis needs to be traceable, rather than relying on a total or coverage assumption that cannot be explained.
Discuss ambition alongside operating conditions
After reviewing the applicable pathway, target work can address coverage, baseline, target form and reduction direction. It should also examine what energy, equipment, products and suppliers can contribute to implementation. Where several commitments coexist, check the relationship with company ambitions and customer requests. Organize the evidence using the applicable standard and current process. A proposed target is a preparation output, rather than a promise that validation will be obtained.
Keep submission materials consistent
The scope can include data diagnosis, target worksheets, rationale notes, an evidence checklist and support with submission questions. Organizational information, inventory versions and target definitions should remain consistent across the materials. Clarifications need to return to the underlying records, with changes retained. The responsible institution sets its validation services, process and fees. Separating internal preparation from external services at the outset makes responsibilities and project dependencies easier to understand.
Bring targets into annual management
Target preparation needs continuing emissions and action tracking. Relate the ambition to energy, operations, procurement and supplier responsibilities, then use annual inventories to review progress. Business or boundary changes need assessment against the relevant rules to determine whether evidence or targets require updates. This makes the target useful to management: teams know which records to monitor, which decisions matter and how implementation can be explained to customers and other stakeholders.

FAQ
Questions before you decide.
Is an existing inventory sufficient for submission?
Check boundaries, data coverage, influential value-chain categories and the applicable pathway. The inventory is a foundation, but target materials may need classification, baseline and coverage evidence. The existence of a report alone does not establish readiness.
Can a consultant validate our target?
No. Consultants assist with accounting, proposals and documentation. SBTi Services conducts validation under its applicable requirements. Describe proposed, submitted and validated targets separately so public materials do not imply that preparation establishes a validation outcome.
Can we copy another company's reduction percentage?
No. Classification, sector, baseline, emissions structure and the applicable version affect pathway selection. Review the requirements for your company, prepare its own target and evidence, and consider the operating conditions needed to implement the proposed ambition.
