Reduction project accounting
Quantify the effect of reduction activities.
Define the baseline scenario, boundary and data for a specific project or activity to develop an explainable reduction calculation.
Define the scenario
Explain differences between activity and baseline, separating reductions from growth or boundary changes.
Methods and evidence
Select an applicable method, document assumptions and retain activity records.
Use the result appropriately
Distinguish internal management, communication and crediting mechanisms. A reduction calculation is not automatically a verified credit.
Establish evidence for a specific activity
Reduction accounting examines the difference between an activity and a defined baseline scenario. It can support investigation of recycling, energy and other business activities. Carbonstop includes scenario accounting within its calculating services so companies can explain how an outcome is derived. Begin by identifying whether the result supports internal decisions, customer communication or a crediting mechanism. Each use needs appropriate methods and evidence; an ordinary calculation is not an issued or verified credit.
Make the baseline comparable
The assessment needs to explain what would happen without the activity. Function, location, period and boundary should be clear, with a basis for the baseline. A recycling scenario needs the destination of recovered materials, processing and substitution assumptions rather than treating collected weight as a reduction quantity. Compare the baseline and project at a consistent service level, separating the measure's effect from output changes or a narrower assessment boundary.
Connect activity records to parameters
A data checklist can organize quantities, energy, transport, treatment and supporting documents, identifying collection frequency, units and sources. Parameters need an applicability basis, with estimates explained. Activities involving several partners also need clarity on responsibilities, data ownership and use of the result. This evidence trail makes the current calculation easier to explain and helps operations teams understand which business records should be retained and improved for continuing work.
Deliver an explanation alongside the figure
The scope can include method notes, baseline and project-scenario tables, a data checklist, calculation records and result interpretation. Important assumptions can be explored through scenarios or sensitivity discussions, making unresolved conditions visible. Consumer-engagement work should describe calculation rules separately from incentive points. Public communication needs a clear activity boundary and evidence basis. An estimate should not become a claim of verified performance simply because it appears in a polished report.
Move from a pilot calculation to repeatable records
One scenario or a sample of existing records can help test the approach and establish whether ongoing data collection is feasible. Teams can then improve collection, review and version management for consistent tracking. Bring the business process, participants, activity logs, original evidence and intended use. A plan to develop credits needs a separate review of mechanism eligibility, with the applicable application and independent verification stages considered alongside the accounting work.

FAQ
Questions before you decide.
Does one tonne recycled equal one tonne of emissions avoided?
No. Material mass and greenhouse-gas emissions are different measures. Consider baseline treatment, recycling processes, transport and substitution using an applicable method and dataset before describing a scenario's calculated reduction.
Can scenario reductions be subtracted from our inventory?
Check boundaries and purpose first. A difference against a baseline and an annual corporate emissions record answer different questions. Adding or subtracting them directly can create duplication or inconsistent accounting. Explain their relationship rather than assuming the figures are interchangeable.
Which records matter most for credibility?
The baseline basis, actual activity quantities, destination or use, and influential parameter sources are central. Improve the records with the greatest effect on the result and retain uncertainty notes; additional report text cannot compensate for missing evidence.
